
Why I read Several hundred years ago, the philosopher, author and courtier Francis Bacons wrote that "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention." While his other views on life and the place of humans in the world can be questioned and dissected, his simple statement demands to be swallowed: that is, it demands to be read completely and understood thoroughly.
